Calculating Material Volume

For any construction or landscaping project, accurately calculating the amount of material you need is the first step to a successful job and a well-managed budget. Whether you are pouring a concrete slab, creating a gravel driveway, or filling a garden bed with soil, this calculator will help you determine the total volume of material required.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Select Units and Shape: Choose your preferred measurement system (Metric or Imperial) and the shape of the area you need to fill (Rectangle or Circle).
  2. Enter Dimensions: Input the measurements for your area. For a rectangle, you will need the length and width. For a circle, you will need the diameter.
  3. Enter Depth: Specify how deep you need to fill the area. Be sure to use the correct unit (centimeters or inches).

The calculator will instantly compute the total volume of material needed in both cubic meters and cubic yards.

Important Considerations for Ordering

  • Compaction: Materials like gravel, sand, and soil will compact after being spread and settled. It is a standard practice to order about 5-10% more material than your calculated volume to account for this.
  • Waste: It is always wise to add a small percentage for waste due to spillage or uneven ground.
  • Supplier Units: Concrete is almost always sold in cubic yards or cubic meters. Gravel and soil might be sold by the cubic yard/meter or by weight (tons/tonnes). If your supplier sells by weight, you will need to know the density of the material to convert the volume.
