BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) Calculator
BMR Calculator
What is Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)?
Your Basal Metabolic Rate is the number of calories your body needs to accomplish its most basic life-sustaining functions. This includes functions like breathing, circulation, nutrient processing, and cell production while your body is in a state of complete rest. BMR is the largest component of your total daily energy expenditure, accounting for a majority of the calories you burn each day.
How to Use the Calculator
To estimate your BMR, provide the following information:
- Units: Select either Metric (cm, kg) or Imperial (feet, inches, pounds).
- Gender: Your biological sex, as this is a variable in the BMR formula.
- Age: Your current age in years.
- Height & Weight: Your current measurements.
The calculator uses this data to estimate your daily calorie needs for basic functioning.
The Mifflin-St Jeor Formula
This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which was developed in the 1990s and is considered by many nutrition experts to be more accurate than the older Harris-Benedict formula. The formulas are as follows:
- For Men: BMR = 10 * weight (kg) + 6.25 * height (cm) - 5 * age (y) + 5
- For Women: BMR = 10 * weight (kg) + 6.25 * height (cm) - 5 * age (y) - 161
What to Do with Your BMR
Your BMR is a foundational number for understanding your energy needs. However, it does not account for the calories you burn through daily activities and exercise. To get a complete picture of your total daily calorie needs, your BMR must be multiplied by an activity factor. This final number is known as your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE). Understanding your BMR is the essential first step toward managing your weight, whether your goal is to lose, gain, or maintain it.
